KnightFight update

We already announced that we were working on overhauling KnightFight and the
big day where we switch to the new version is coming up.

The update will take place on Sunday, 17th November 2019 at 02:00 UTC
(which is 03:00 German time) and will result in a downtime of about 3 hours if
things don't go according to plan.

Please note that you will be logged out and need to log in again after the
update is finished.

Further details on the changes will be announced shortly after the update.

Technical details

The following information is meant for people who want to know more about the
details on how we plan to migrate to the new version.

Preparations

Essentially, we're going to switch from a bunch of old servers to our new
infrastructure with new servers that we already prepared for the update.

Since we're switching everything to HTTPS, we also need proper TLS
certificates. To make sure we don't run into issues during the actual update,
we already changed the DNS records and generated the certificates and
got them signed.

This means that right now, KnightFight is already hosted on our new
servers by using HTTP proxies that relay everything to/from our old servers.

We also already changed backups and monitoring accordingly.

Sunday, 02:00 UTC

The first step is to put a placeholder page on all KnightFight domains, so that
visitors know what's going on.

Next up, we're going to set all databases read-only and transfer the old
databases to our new deployment.

Once this is done, we're going to apply all migrations that bring the databases
in sync with our new code base. While we've already tested this extensively on
production data, this is still the point where things might go wrong and it's
also the main reason why we scheduled a longer downtime.

If nothing has exploded, we are new simply going to switch the web servers to
the new KnightFight version. We're using NixOS, so activating the new
configuration is only a matter of seconds.

Post-update

At this point, the new KnightFight version should be up and running and the
following items are left to do:

  • Verify all game worlds to see whether the update has been successful
  • Update moonID API addresses to use the HTTPS variants
  • Enable moonID for game worlds that didn't support moonID so far
  • Publish news post about what has changed
  • Shut down and wipe all of the old servers
  • Monitor support tickets to see whether any post-update problems arise

We're moving to our new infrastructure which we already had in place for quite a while and since we did a major overhaul of the game code it just makes sense to combine it with the migration.

And yes, your progress will of course remain. If that wouldn't be the case we would have announced that explicitly.

Not directly after the update, but there will be at least one new game world afterwards.

Ah, I should have figured. I've been a long-time player. Hell since year one, if I remember correctly. I remember back when there wasn't a BattleServer I go so far back.

Also I'd like to thank you and RedMoon for your preserverance. Honestly, if I may be frank about this, things were looking pretty bleek a couple years ago. But I see more than otherwise now.

Status: The update is live and a few migrations have failed, but furtunately those were only minor issues and easy to fix. Sorry that this took 20 minutes and 33 seconds longer than announced :-/

We didn't actually manage to get all of the changes in that we wanted, so we'll try to roll them out later this day. The promised post about what is new/changed will follow shortly thereafter.

DId this update.. delete my toon?.. Because I can not find my character at all..perhaps I missed something?.. Or rather.. I found my server, and I am unable to log in to my character any longer, or at least that is what it Seams like. It tells me the name already exists, I go to log in, and it keeps booting me back to the Login Start, please enter information. Nothing I have tried allows me to access my toon that I have slowly worked on for a dozen years now.

Dleted cahce and adjusted things, did figure it out after a while, my password was not processing correctly.

Managed to get it fixed, took a good 45 minutes.. but I am able to access my toons again.

log back in through the MoonID portal an existing accounts should be back up & running (atleast my 6 did)

I am more interested on why our "forum" button was removed from the game tool bar, instead of updated so it would actually work ?
The forum of each world IS what kept it active

Can't remember the lat time I was able to log into the UK forum - I just getting a generic landing page for about 12 months or longer now!

Hopefully we get a single forum but with language subsections!

The forums are actually coming back with the moonID refactor next year, where we plan to reintroduce game-specific forums.

I love the new design of knightfight :) Looks good, great work!

The only thing i realized which annoys me, is that the i receive 10 - 20+ messages and attacks from undeads now. >.<

The reason you're getting these is because you should have gotten them in the past already, but the implementation was broken. In the future those messages/attacks should be more infrequent.

Log in issues taken care of, however my Load Screen for KF now looks horrible. The lines are not where they should, some of the text is skewed and in the wrong spot, and it is difficult to read now. It hurts my head and eyes trying to sort through it, Anyone else have that issue? I reload the screen, it does the same thing.. It is not smooth when it loads now, looks more like printed paper when the drum gets stuck to one side of the sheet. It takes extra time to sort through it for missions.

Wow! Updated KnightFight you guys sure as hell did! It's got it all going on!

Works seamlessly. The updated backgrounds look great. And I've also noticed in battlegrounds that the undead have AI and backgrounds now? I got a message from one even:

Towards the end of the battle, my knight did get 21 consecutive attack attempts. I have him speced especially for Stamina.
